Born in Sirsi, Karnataka in 1972, Shanbhag completed a diploma course in Electrical Engineering before pursuing a diploma in painting from Bangalore in 1996. He then went on to study creative painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S.U., Baroda in 1998.
