The ŠKODA story spans over a century in the automobile industry. Telling its history is like telling the story of the world’s motoring. It all began in 1895 when two young men joined efforts to make bicycles under the family business named Laurin & Klement. Later in 1899, the Laurin & Klement Co. began producing motorcycles, which were soon successful and gained several racing victories.
Like the motorcycles, the 1st Laurin & Klement automobile, the Voiturette was a success. The initial phase of automobile manufacture was successful from the very beginning. In 1925, following merger with Pilsen, the company enjoyed enormous progress, producing beautiful vehicles with many fine details and breaking records at international competitions.
In 1991, German automaker Volkswagen AG, one of the premium automobile manufacturers in Europe, acquired ŠKODA. Based in the Czech Republic, ŠKODA Auto has developed, manufactured and marketed passenger cars throughout the world, ensuring comfort, convenience and mobility. Today, ŠKODA Auto has kept its Czech tradition alive through its fleet of premium cars: Fabia, Octavia, Laura and the company’s pride, the ŠKODA Superb.
ŠKODA India wants to aid in the globalisation of the Indian Auto industry by bringing in technology that heralds a renaissance for the industry, by exemplifying the highest standards of safety and comfort for its consumers with as much care and concern for the environment.
In the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, ŠKODA Auto highlighted the brand's new direction by presenting a concept car Mission L, which reflected the brand's new design language and new corporate identity with a young, fresh and precise logo. The car boasted clearly defined shapes and a great sense of detail, and the new logo with the central philosophy of "Simply Clever", supplemented by the promise: "Clever Engineering with a Human Touch". The new brand philosophy essentially clarifies what character Skoda products shall have, how they shall be designed, and how Skoda would act toward its customers.
ŠKODA entered the Indian premium car market in 2001 and setup a plant at Shendra, on the outskirts of Aurangabad, making it the company's first manufacturing facility outside Europe. This plant is spread across 300,000 square meters. Looking at the growing demand for its products ŠKODA Auto India also doubled it's production capacity to 40,000 units per year. This facility is also regarded as one of the best engine assembly plants in Asia.
ŠKODA Auto India, until now has introduced six product lines including the flagship ŠKODA Superb, ŠKODA Laura, ŠKODA Octavia, ŠKODA Fabia, ŠKODA Yeti and recently launched ŠKODA Rapid. It has been instrumental in bringing in latest technologies like Twin Door technology, 1.8 turbo petrol engine, common rail diesel engine and DSG Automatic gearbox among others.
ŠKODA Auto India has 5 models on sale in India – ŠKODA Superb, ŠKODA Laura, ŠKODA Fabia, ŠKODA Yeti and the recently launched ŠKODA Rapid. ŠKODA Auto India has a network of 106 outlets across the country and has sold over 1,54,023 units since December 2001.
The ŠKODA Prize is a contemporary art award instituted in year 2010 to recognise and reward 'An Indian Artist under the age of 45' responsible for the most outstanding exhibition, or other presentation of their body of work produced in the twelve months preceding. It is the ultimate recognition for quality in the art world, endorsed and underlined by the high priests of the Indian Art industry.
